I have always been an advocate of Patagonia Sin Represas, Patagonia Without Dams, but now, having actually seen the area they intend to inundate, the beautiful rivers that will forever change, the picturesque vistas that will be ruined by transmission lines, I am whole heartedly against this endeavor by the Chilean government and foreign private interests to use pristine Patagonia as a source of energy.
Unfortunately, despite more than 60 percent of the country also in opposition, the HydroAysén project was recently approved, putting Patagonia in true peril. Two damns would go on the Baker River, one at the beautiful scene pictured above, and three more on the Pascua River. They would then transmit the energy created along a planned corridor, 1,500 miles long, 400 feet wide. At least 1,000 miles of that corridor runs through endangered forests and national parks, in which they plan to clear-cut –64 communities and 14 protected areas would be affected.
The opposition’s (the majority’s) main argument is that there are several other more efficient, less damaging options in which to confront Chile’s energy demands, such as solar farms in the north’s massive areas of nothingness, the sun-baked San Pedro de Atacama Desert, or wave energy, seeing as how Chile has more than 2,600 miles of coast. It is as a New York Times editorial stated way back in 2008, “Building large-scale hydroelectric dams is an old-world way of obtaining energy. It is too late in the environmental life of this planet to accept such ecologically destructive energy solutions or the model of unfettered growth they are meant to fuel.”
Fortunately, though the dams were approved, they’re just now beginning the fight of hashing out the transmission line details. Protesters are not giving up and continue to organize and oppose HydroAysén. There is still hope to save “the last wild place on Earth”…
