Playing for thousands, Manu Chao brought an electric energy to the National Stadium with his reggae, rock and salsa influenced sounds. Singing in French, Spanish, English, Portuguese and often mixing them together, Chao gave Santiago quite a show.
Huge in Latin America and Europe, for some reason, Manu Chao never made it big in the United States. However, I had heard of him, and when the opportunity arose–about 5 hours before the show–to track down the producer and beg for a photo pass, I did just that. So, after sweet-talking the security guards, tracking down Arturo Diaz and a giving heartfelt speech as to why I should get a photo pass, I got it! The show was amazing.
