But then a captured (good-looking) Portuguese miner came across her path and she pardoned his death, falling in love. So much so that she converted to Catholicism, shocking her Inca followers, who proceeded to kill the couple just moments after her baptism.
Years later an evangelist found a cross that was said to mark the couple’s grave and he built a church.
From there it has developed into a huge festival, every single July 15. How it all ties together, honestly, I’m still not sure. But, it’s surely marvelous to see and be a part of.
