I looked at this phlog and thought how at one point, I didn’t need to go to the flowering desert, because I lived within it, right here in Santiago.

“Manos verdes,” Green hands: An extraordinary ability to make plants grow. In English, this would be known as a “green thumb.” Continue reading Monday Memories – Carmen’s Eden.
The traditional fixins were there and before/whilst eating (we were hungry!), we all went around and said what we were thankful for. Health, having each other, this past year and probably Ian´s was the best response: I´m thankful for my first Thanksgiving.
This is my third Thanksgiving in a row in a country that doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving. However, you just can’t take the thankfulness out of a Gringo come this time of year, it’s unnatural. So despite the absence of pumpkins, despite the summer heat and despite having to work that day, we give thanks in our own little way.
I accompanied a friend this past Sunday to the santiagoGOrun, cheering him on while he ran a 10K, clearly not participating myself. I tried running for a bit once. Not for me. Anyway, the setup was not overly photo friendly, especially without a press pass, but I got a few I’ll throw your way.
I have every single pre-recorded metro speaker announcement memorized. I’ve ridden the thing a lot, and I love its purpose. Santiago has a wonderfully efficient and clean metro system, and I plan to photograph it much more. This is just a random shot taken after shooting a protest. I absolutely love trying to capture motion.
You’re faced with two doors at a fairly trendy and touristy bar. One says “M,” the other is unmarked.
M for Men? Or. M for Mujeres, women in Spanish?
Soooo, Manu Chao is playing in Santiago this November 26, 2011 at the Estadio Nacional. All tickets cost $11,000 CLP, and you better believe I’ll be sacrificing a meal of vegetables in order to buy my ticket. I first saw Manu Chao in Santiago back in 2009, as I was so lucky as to get a photography pass and jam into the night with this phenomenal band. So today’s memory is now an anticipation; I can’t wait!
Las Calles Son Nuestras.
It’s a funny thing how people/cultures take on the subject of death, one of life’s surest, most frequent events. Much of Chile, being very Catholic, celebrates life rather than dwelling on death. There is an afterlife; and those left behind, for now, just want to honor their loved ones’ lives with beautiful flowers and celebration. Continue reading Día de Todos los Santos
Life is good, busy and a bit random, hence today’s memory.
Two Randoms Make a Phlog Continue reading Monday Memories – Random A beautiful, hot day and more than 100 beer vendors, Santiago’s Oktoberfest is quite a hit. Starting last Thursday and going on until November 6, it makes for a great afternoon of enjoying the fine flavors of a cold one. Continue reading Cerveza y Sol
Chilean cemeteries have always intrigued me. This one located in Freirina–one of Chile’s oldest “cities” and next to Huasco–is a beautiful and colorful tribute to lost loved ones. Continue reading Rest in Peace
Chile’s flowering desert, while absolutely amazing to all whose eyes fall upon it, I feel can only truly be appreciated by those who live here or have at least passed through before, knowing its usual panorama.
Usually just a dusty, arid sea of brown or white sand next to the ocean, every so often, a fantastic phenomenon takes place: beautiful, intricate flowers burst out of the Earth, and the desert becomes a botanical garden. Continue reading The Flowering Desert – Day 1
Huasco…I loved this little city; I loved this little city with all my heart. Part of el Norte Chico, about 14 hours north of Santiago in bus, Huasco has beautiful beaches, ever-so friendly people and charm. Un encanto. Continue reading Huasco
I really love where I live now in Santiago. However, from time to time I wonder over to my old neighborhood just to appreciate its Bohemian ways.

By far the largest march I’ve ever participated in, today’s national strike brought together more than 200,000 protesters, fighting for a better Chile. It was absolutely crazy. At the culmination of the march that covered miles, things naturally turned violent, tear gas in every direction, the sound of rocks pelting police cars, street fires, etc. Continue reading We march…
What more is there to say? Continue reading Zombiewalk 2011
I’ll never forget the first time I went to Cajón del Maipo back in 2009. It took my breath away, and it’s continued to do so ever since. Doing yesterday’s phlog, I realized, I’ve been there so many times, and yet I would go again tomorrow…in a heart beat.

Nothing is better than pulling off the perfect birthday surprise, which Ashley and I did for our lovely Maiten. She had no clue we rented a truck for the day, so you can imagine her surprise when we rolled up in a big ol’ 4×4 Toyota and took her to the middle of the Andes. It was one of those simply perfect days, you know, loading up the truck with a group of friendly hitchhikers, jumping like idiots to all be mid-air when my camera, hanging from the truck door, snapped a picture after a 10-second timer, bathing in hot springs in the midst of snow, driving through a blizzard and arriving back to t-shirt weather…all in a day. Continue reading Happy Birthday Maiten
Martin Luther said it best, “Nothing good ever comes of violence.”
What a shame to walk around my lovely neighborhood and see this destruction. What a shame that I couldn´t get on or off at my metro station due to it being full of tear gas and people throwing rocks. Continue reading Shattered
What can I say, I’ve got spring fever. I took the beautiful evening after work yesterday to be outside and enjoy, and Monday Memories never got done. It’s equally beautiful today…bringing us to today’s memory:
How could I not take her picture on my recent trip to Viña Undurraga? She’s so freaking cute that I saved the photo so she could get her very own phlog post.
