It’s been a hot second since I’ve posted a Monday Memory. So many things going on. However, as this is one of my fondest memories, it’s time. It was such a large phlog that I’ve decided to break it up into two posts, so check back next Monday for the rest!

The aftermath…
It was around 6:30 a.m. when Ian and I headed out with our cameras in order to photograph the aftermath, a.k.a. New Year’s Day. Continue reading The aftermath…
Welcome 2012
One of the best ends to a year I’ve ever had, being in Valparaíso for New Year’s festivities was simply fantastic. Known as the best New Year’s party in all of South America, this lovely port town, composed of 42 hills, promises an amazing fireworks show and a party that lasts way into the next day. (Check back tomorrow for more on that subject.) Continue reading Welcome 2012
The Best of 2011
2011 was quite a year…I’ll let the pictures speak for it.

Capturing a rare electrical storm in Santiago, Chile. Continue reading The Best of 2011
Feliz Navidad
So this is Christmas
For Christmas 2011, I have found yet another lovely family willing to open their home and let this foreigner take part in their traditions, sparing me the loneliness that comes when living so far from home, from family. Continue reading So this is Christmas
The hills are alive…
…with the sound of art, culture and life!
Seriously, I <3 Valpo. Continue reading The hills are alive…

Valparaíso, a World Heritage Site, and a wonder of Chile, just an hour and a half from Santiago. It’s colorful, artsy and on the ocean, what more could you want?
Free Education
In 1843, the Universidad de Chile opened its doors to provide quality higher education. Its first building, located on Alemeda, is a beautiful structure full of history. It has now become the pinnacle for protestors, graffitied with frustration, by those demanding a major overhaul of Chile’s current higher education system. What they’re seeking is free education for todos, all. Continue reading Free Education
Horseback. Andes Mountains. Good People. Yes.
A beautiful summer Saturday in the foothills of the Andes…
I LOVE HUASOS… Continue reading Horseback. Andes Mountains. Good People. Yes.

Monday Memories – Carmen’s Eden.
I looked at this phlog and thought how at one point, I didn’t need to go to the flowering desert, because I lived within it, right here in Santiago.

“Manos verdes,” Green hands: An extraordinary ability to make plants grow. In English, this would be known as a “green thumb.” Continue reading Monday Memories – Carmen’s Eden.
´Twas a happy Thanksgiving indeed
The traditional fixins were there and before/whilst eating (we were hungry!), we all went around and said what we were thankful for. Health, having each other, this past year and probably Ian´s was the best response: I´m thankful for my first Thanksgiving.
I’m thankful for the struggle…
This is my third Thanksgiving in a row in a country that doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving. However, you just can’t take the thankfulness out of a Gringo come this time of year, it’s unnatural. So despite the absence of pumpkins, despite the summer heat and despite having to work that day, we give thanks in our own little way.
santiagoGOrun
I accompanied a friend this past Sunday to the santiagoGOrun, cheering him on while he ran a 10K, clearly not participating myself. I tried running for a bit once. Not for me. Anyway, the setup was not overly photo friendly, especially without a press pass, but I got a few I’ll throw your way.
The Metro
I have every single pre-recorded metro speaker announcement memorized. I’ve ridden the thing a lot, and I love its purpose. Santiago has a wonderfully efficient and clean metro system, and I plan to photograph it much more. This is just a random shot taken after shooting a protest. I absolutely love trying to capture motion.
Going to the bathroom
You’re faced with two doors at a fairly trendy and touristy bar. One says “M,” the other is unmarked.
M for Men? Or. M for Mujeres, women in Spanish?
Monday Memories – Manu Chao
Soooo, Manu Chao is playing in Santiago this November 26, 2011 at the Estadio Nacional. All tickets cost $11,000 CLP, and you better believe I’ll be sacrificing a meal of vegetables in order to buy my ticket. I first saw Manu Chao in Santiago back in 2009, as I was so lucky as to get a photography pass and jam into the night with this phenomenal band. So today’s memory is now an anticipation; I can’t wait!

Las Calles Son Nuestras.
Día de Todos los Santos
All Saints Day.
It’s a funny thing how people/cultures take on the subject of death, one of life’s surest, most frequent events. Much of Chile, being very Catholic, celebrates life rather than dwelling on death. There is an afterlife; and those left behind, for now, just want to honor their loved ones’ lives with beautiful flowers and celebration. Continue reading Día de Todos los Santos
Monday Memories – Random
Life is good, busy and a bit random, hence today’s memory.

Cerveza y Sol
A beautiful, hot day and more than 100 beer vendors, Santiago’s Oktoberfest is quite a hit. Starting last Thursday and going on until November 6, it makes for a great afternoon of enjoying the fine flavors of a cold one. Continue reading Cerveza y Sol
Rest in Peace
Chilean cemeteries have always intrigued me. This one located in Freirina–one of Chile’s oldest “cities” and next to Huasco–is a beautiful and colorful tribute to lost loved ones. Continue reading Rest in Peace
The Flowering Desert – Day 2
Chile’s flowering desert, while absolutely amazing to all whose eyes fall upon it, I feel can only truly be appreciated by those who live here or have at least passed through before, knowing its usual panorama.
