Monday Memories – Soccer in Chile

Last night, two grand rivalries played for the national championship title, Universidad de Chile versus Universidad Católica. U de Chile had a major win, 4 to 1, and the streets filled with U de Chile fans, waving flags down the streets, beeping horns, yelling endlessly. It was crazy, and actually a bit dangerous to be out and about.

Chileans love their fútbol, and the madness reminded me of when all of Chile united behind their country during the World Cup games. During the games, the streets were virtually empty, as if time had stopped, and then after the wins, the streets came alive, transforming into a confetti-scattered party. So now, I bring you Monday´s memory, in honor of all those who kept me awake last night with their chanting and screaming and incessant horn blowing.

¡¡¡¡Vamos chile!!!!

6/16/10

At 7:15 this morning, Chile made its debut in the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Honduras. It is safe to say that probably 75% of the 16 million inhabiting this country were awake and watching.

Thirty-four minutes into the game, Jean Beausejour made a ggggoooooaaaaallllll for Chile, and the beeping of horns and cheering commenced, echoing throughout the city. The battle continued, but as the clock ticked toward 90 minutes, Honduras fell short, giving Chile their first World Cup win in 48 years.

The city went wild.

If there is one thing that can unite Chileans, it’s fútbol. And today all of Chile celebrated their victory, with thousands pouring into Plaza Italia to sing and cheer for their beloved equipo (team.) Having seen the aftermath of previous Chilean victories, I knew I must go to Plaza Italia; so at aproximately 10:00 a.m., I headed toward the madness and witnessed more happiness and pride than I have ever seen. How wonderful to see people and a country unite, even if it is just for a game, because for Chile, it is so much more than “just” a game.
