Monday Memories – Cajón del Maipo

I’ll never forget the first time I went to Cajón del Maipo back in 2009. It took my breath away, and it’s continued to do so ever since. Doing yesterday’s phlog, I realized, I’ve been there so many times, and yet I would go again tomorrow…in a heart beat.

One of Santiago’s greatest attributes is that it’s a huge city with loads to do, ye

t drive east, west, north or south for an hour and you’re surrounded by breathtaking vistas. The mountains envelope you, the skies overwhelm you and a sense of smallness overcomes you; being surrounded by the Andes really makes you realize that you’re just this tiny speck within a great big world.

San José de Maipo is a perfect day trip to get some fresh air from Santiago. In all actuality, one could spend days in the area, as there are loads of treasures, but if a day is all you have, that’s just as well. The goal was to make it to the Termas del Plomo, natural hot springs in the Yeso Valley, however, as we drove deeper into mountains, the temperatures dropped, the sky became gray and eventually snow conquered the path, forcing us to turn around. All was hardly lost though, because the drive alone and the pit stops along the way to take photos and climb around made for a perfect Saturday.
