Monday Memories – Dieciocho

I have now spent three independence celebrations in Chile. For an entire weekend, it’s all things national heritage, all things Chilean, and it’s been fantastic every single year. Last year was the 200th anniversary of Chile being Spain-free, and I was there, running around with my camera, documenting what it truly meant to be Chilean. So this year, I decided to forget the worries and dangers of dragging my beautiful camera around, and simply enjoy. Aside from all the pretty fireworks, nothing was different in comparison to my previous “dieciochos.” It’s all about food, family and fun. What more do we need in life?

200 Years

9/20/10Chile's bicentential

Alas the much anticipated weekend of Dieciocho has come and gone. Generally everyone has gained a pound or two and all are utterly wiped out.

A great weekend it was though, full of tradition and enjoyment. Dancing, massive meat consumtion, rodeos, light spectaculars (as seen above–truly a fantastic show) and so much more.

Chile has definitely had its ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies; this weekend embraced them all and celebrated what it has been through and what is to come.

Chilean or foreigner, it was a great time to be a part of Chile.

Chilean cueca

A short and simple dance really, which never changes, no matter the song. Here’s a good example of the scarf-twirling, foot-stomping, hand-clapping Chilean tradition: CUECA.

Traditional garb for the woman is either a floral patterned dress (as pictured) or a black skirt and jacket with a white shirt underneath. For men, black pants and a patterned vest on top with a hat to polish it off. Handkerchiefs for both.

The amount of cute kids this weekend was almost too much. I so enjoyed taking their photos.

RODEO

So it turns out that this is a very cruel practice, yet still so interesting to photograph. The point of Chilean rodeo is to run the cow into the wall and knock it out. Not so nice.

¡Feliz Dieciocho!

La Moneda fireworks

Thousands upon thousands came out for the light spectacular. I tried so hard to get centered, but it was absolutely impossible. Also I had to extend my arms straight above my head, try to hold the camera as steady as possible despite being jam packed in the mob of people, and use an extremely slow shutter speed to capture its greatness.
