100 Barricas de Chile

What a treat! Best paired with a tasty barbecue while celebrating the decision to make a major life change.

100 barricas de chile

This wine’s journey began back in 2011, when Chile’s top 100 winemakers contributed one barrel of their best Cabernet Sauvignon. How did they choose the winemakers? That answer is not so clear, but the result is supposedly the best 100 barrels of the country’s most emblematic grape. Being a big fan of MOVI, I can’t 100 percent agree, but all the same the wine was delicious.

In short: 100 barrels from 100 winemakers that I’m not 100 percent convinced are the Chile’s best, but that are undoubtedly special.

Possibly most interesting about the project is that no blending occurred. This not only left every bottle with one percent of each winemaker’s barrel, but also includes a wide variety of styles. Barrels came from Limarí to Maule and all the valleys in between, spanning more than 700 kilometers from north to south.

100 Barricas de Chile Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

A profound ruby red with an intense nose, where aromas of red fruits such as plum and cherry intermingle with hints of walnut and spices. A nice balance in the mouth with a marked acidity and smooth tannins. Medium intensity flavors of plum, cherries, tobacco and vanilla. A medium (+) finish that makes it quite easy to finish the bottle. Ready to drink, but can improve.

The wine is a pretty big deal. It comes in a fancy box with a book that highlights each winemaker and their contribution. The introduction also includes each valley’s role, which I thought could possibly be of interest to one of you out there. Chile is rich in diversity and it’s not always talked about in mainstream wine publications. So here’s a brief breakdown:

  • Limarí, Elqui, Aconcagua, Casablanca, Leyda and San Antonio Valleys – Refreshing flavors with medium body, long acidity and good balance.
  • Maipo Valley – Above all: Elelgance. Mineral notes, black fruits, juiciness and acidity with enveloping tannins.
  • Cachapoal Valley – Rich acidity and a full mouth with an intense red fruit influence. Slightly rebellious tannins and wines with nerve.
  • Colchagua Valley – Red fruits, good structure, silkiness, voluptuousness and strong wines with rich tannins.
  • Curicó and Maule Valleys – High acidity, potent freshness and youth. Fruits like cherry, maqui and pomegranate with medium body and a high cellar potential.

Cheers!

*I figure I’ll cut back on the super technical tastings, because in reality they interest very few. If you would like have a more in-depth tasting, just let me know. I usually go follow the WSET tasting method and write it all down.
