Santiago on strike

Alameda
One of Santiago´s busiest streets yesterday during rush hour time...it´s usually bumper to bumper.

The city has all but come to a halt. Windows are boarded up, the streets are empty and talk of rioting and protests fill the air. It´s the two-day national strike, where the people unite and demand a better life. Yesterday was eerily peaceful, but today thousands are filling the streets to march–and sadly, I´m here sitting at work on my lunch break, dying to be out there with my camera. It´s probably best though, as I´ve been teargassed before, and there is a guarantee of more of that today.

The thing is, I get the marching, I think it´s wonderful to see people unite and fight for a good cause, but so often, it gets downright dangerous, turning from peaceful protests to rancorous riots. And in this case, these two days will cost the country around $200 million USD, in the end, hurting the very ones fighting the most. The poor will get hit the hardest as prices rise from their two days of not working. The irony.

But change is indeed necessary, as an excellent fellow Gringa photographer living here, Kyle Hepp, pointed out, probably skewed and even lower, the average income per family in Chile in 2009 was around $735, 503 CLP, $1,570 dollars. And Chile is by no means cheap, rather quite expensive, the only cheap part about it is housing.

I don´t know the answer,  but as I sit here and read that they set a national church´s doors on fire, I surely know it´s not that. It proves nothing.

A generally bustling scene, dead.
Just a few folk out on the street, making some noise, supporting the cause.
The banks on my street all boarded their windows. The street is eerily dead for around 8 p.m.

And as I wrote in my article, for better or worse, this strike will pass, only to see another take its place…

Does running a well-established website such
as yours take a lot of work? I am brand new to running a blog but I do write in my diary every day.
I’d like to start a blog so I can easily share my experience and thoughts online.

  8. You really make it seem so easy together with your presentation but
I in finding this topic to be really something which I feel I’d never understand.
It kind of feels too complex and very huge for me.
I’m taking a look ahead for your next put up, I will attempt to get the grasp of it!
